How to Access thinkorswim When You Have Accounts at Both Ameritrade and Schwab

Welcome to thinkorswim at Schwab! You may notice that the TD Ameritrade account linked to one of your User IDs has moved over to Schwab, but some of your other accounts may not have moved over yet. They will be on their way in the coming months. In the interim, if you are looking to access the accounts still at TD Ameritrade on thinkorswim, you will need to connect back to TD Ameritrade. To do so on thinkorswim desktop, follow the steps below:

  1. Launch thinkorswim.
  2. On the login screen, navigate to the bottom left corner and click on the gear wheel to open the Settings menu.
  3. At the top, click on the Account dropdown and select TD Ameritrade, then click Save.
  4. Click Restart when prompted. The application will restart, download the necessary files, and take you to the login screen again.
  5. You are now able to enter thinkorswim with your TD Ameritrade credentials for that specific account. Please note that this User ID would have been established when you opened this specific account and may be different than the User ID you typically used. Once you enter that specific User ID, click Continue, then enter your password and click Continue once more.
  6. Happy Trading!

If you are unfamiliar with the specific TD Ameritrade User IDs that you created for these other accounts, please visit this page for login assistance.

Do you plan to actively use thinkorswim desktop in an account that has moved to Schwab as well as in an account that is still at TD Ameritrade?

If so, you may wish to consider downloading a second instance of thinkorswim. This will allow you to have one instance of thinkorswim desktop connected to Schwab and a second instance connected to TD Ameritrade so that you do not need to switch your connection back and forth. You can copy over your desktop settings from your existing download of desktop to the new instance. Go here to download a second instance of thinkorswim desktop. You can find detailed instructions on how to download a second instance as well as how to share desktop settings here.
